Mobile Data Tracking – Takeaways from 1st FTC Spring Privacy Seminar

The FTC held its first seminar in the agency’s Spring Privacy Series yesterday on the hot topic of Mobile Device Tracking.  In over two-hours the well-attended panel discussion covered privacy, security and regulatory issues raised by mobile tracking joined by Twitter users posting comments via the #FTCMobile hashtag.

With the billion dollar mobile app market growing rapidly with high interest among retailers in potentially using mobile device tracking in and around retailers’ brick and mobile facilities (in an effort to replicate the type of tracking websites can do) the privacy and security issues are many.  Add in burgeoning Mobile Payments, which we’ve covered in other posts, and it’s easy to see why the issue is top of mind for many privacy advocates, companies privacy officers and industry associations.

Submitted public comments to the FTC are already available for review at http://www.ftc.gov/policy/public-comments/initiative-516 and we’ll continue to follow the FTC and other agencies efforts in the mobile device space.

To discuss your mobile apps’ development, privacy and security feel free to call us at 203 307-2665 or email at info@SmartedgeLawGroup.com.
